Ever think something was missed in a childhood that causes attitudes or problems in adults? If you were not taught the word "no" as a child, not made responsible for your actions and taught consistent healthy lessons growing up, isn't that part of why the country's in the economic state it is? Wanting everything going, buying items you don't need like a drunken sailor, out of control spending. Poor impulse control. Doesn't it all go back to the basic you saw, were taught as a child? Seeing parents save money, take care of what they have, being grateful for what they have and not always wanting more and more. Christmas within the budget...not over the top spending. Thinking of others, respecting them and their property. Manners. In Northern Maine, kids earn their spending money..watch the video on picking potatoes. Its about others..helping them, respecting them and their property. Manners, pitching in, working hard to make things better. That is Maine..the way life should be!

Great Post! I have thought the same thing. As I got older I realized how thankful I am for the way my parents raised me.
They just did what they were taught, shown in most cases. 50% divorce rate part of the mess up in what kids see...not coming from warm, loving homes in all cases..which makes it harder to see the right way to teach their kids...snowballs.
Great post.
Personal accountability is a trait I tried to instill in my kids, and the lack of it in politics, as well as marriage, on the job and everywhere else is the biggest problem facing our society (IMHO).
Maine is a beautiful place. Been there a couple times, since my father in law was a Mainer. I agree with your concept. This whole country is living beyond its means. I sincerely think we need to take a lesson from the past and be accountable for our actions, be considerate of others, put some wholesome shows on tv for our childreen and put the pledge and prayer back in the schools.
Great values are timeless, but I agree many have been lost in recent years. Self denial and self control make for a mature adult that does not have to have everything they see.
This is all so true. One of the positive things about the downturn in the economy is that people are simplifying their lives.
Linda...wholesome shows like The Waltons are not hokey...they are real, warm and genuine not sensationalized. Kathy...you are right that when money gets tight, folks start to re-think their lives and spending. Teaching kids like on a warm the satisfaction of a job well done, or just being done a job they may not particularly like. They learn how to work, to like to be industrious, to realize no matter how hard the struggle, they will get thru it with work, faith, hope.
This is very true! The best teachers are the example we are shown as kids; everything from manners to values! Have a great holiday and happy belated Birthday!
BTW, I have sent you a note about the Lemonade Award! HERE is the link in case you missed it (it will open in a new window)!
Thanks Rich...checking it out...(trotting off in other direction on internet....electrons humming)
