Maine. A State That Has Endured With Solid Roots And Family Values Intact.

No doubt, where ever you live, you think your hometown and state and county are the best in the land.  Is part of it pride because you have lived there so long and have a sense of loyalty to the place?  Or do you consider yourself overall  smarter than the average bear and of course you scoped it out and decided this is the place to hang your hat, raise your family and prepare to meet your maker in the relatively short time we are on planet earth? Whatever the reason, I think Maine is a pretty special place and has a good overall image in a person's brain when they learn "Oh...you are from Maine".  Click the state to learn the basics on what this state in the right  hand corner of the USA is from a factual standpoint.Maine's 16 Counties

Now, if you consider that the pace of life, the pursuit of the world's goodies has spoiled the heart and soul of what this country always stood for...you may agree with writer Herrick Kimball who's viewpoint is "that the rottenness of modern culture" has made  places like Maine with its agrarian back ground  a wonderful place to retreat and reconnect with the rural roots that everyone had  once upon a time. Everyone used to live in a small community that was filled with unqiue individuals that needed each other to survive and who offered something special to make that community one of a kind from their contributions and lifestyle examples. Click the Maine seal below to get a taste of his viewpoint.

Andrew...nice posting and sharing thoughts on your state...a friend of mine had a cottage/hotel business there which I visited in the fall-absolutely beautiful country.Maine is certainly a beautiful state, just a little to north for my personal aversion to snow.

You are so right about fall...I remember helping on the potato harvest.  Many still take a week or more off to do the same and don't consider it working to help the farmer. Youth do the same each summer by going in three weeks early and getting out for three weeks to earn some major pocket change!  Snow if you are dressed for it is not so bad....we don't get the freezing wet kind...just the white fluffy light variety. i think the eskimos say there are 100 kinds of snow? Thanks for your comments!

I am going to add Maine to my list of states to visit on the next road trip.  Glad to see someone with a real joy for the place they live.

When you need a break from the cold, come down to FL and enjoy Christmas on the beach in your shorts and some sun block.

Cruise up...the four seasons are great and winter is not a tough time...we dress for it, have snowsleds, ice fish, ice skate, ski and enjoy the lack of black flies...and market slows down a little so we can catch our breath! Will be down in the middle of February to break up the winter though...get those tickets to see Mickey and Minnie at Disney!  Dig out the rods to go fishing for the big tuna on your end...you can fly fish for the brook trout when you land here too!  Say hello to "Jaws"!Good luck getting him in the boat!

Hi Andrew,
What a fantastic post on Maine.  I hope you added this one to Localism.  If I didn't already want to retire my sunblock for snoe shoes in a few years you certainly would have convinced me to consider Maine as a very viable option.  I'm a native New Englander (NY) and do so miss the four season weather up there.  Though I never made it to Maine while I lived in NY, I vacationed at Moosehead lake a few years back and just loved it (minus the black flies).  I look forward to returning.  Nice job on the post.
