The mission is all about what the buyer and seller come to you for, and they don't do this real estate dog and pony day and night. You do if you are an independent contractor working strictly on commission sales.

Get results and you get paid. Don't and you won't.

Andy, You've summed it up nicely.  We're in a pay for performance business.  Succeed and get paid, busting your butt isn't enough if the desired result for the buyer or seller doesn't happen.
