Thanks for posting this about your dad. My dad, Leon Tabor, also was a B-24 tail gunner - 15th Air Force – he was shot down 70 years ago tomorrow on a bombing run from his base in Bari, Italy over Hitler’s oil refinery complex at Ploesti, Romania. Like your dad, he was small and wirey; he believes that they chose him to be a tail gunner because he fit well into the turret.
He’s the last living member of his crew, and I am going to Kansas to take him to lunch tomorrow. Hard to imagine what these young men did 70 years ago – I think they actually saved Western civilization as we know it. I was just Googling B-24 stuff tonight and saw your post. Incidentally, the navigator on my dad’s crew, Bill Hathaway, was from Maine. He eventually became a US Senator, representing Maine. He passed away last year on June 24, the 69th anniversary of the date they were shot down over Ploesti.
Nice to know that you and I as Americans from very different places have this common history with what our fathers did.
Every day is, should be Veterans Day.
Not just waving flags, playing marching band music in a park or on floats passing by once a year. We blog on not just real estate but what it is like where we live, work and play in a small Maine town. The real estate profession is fueled by a person, with a life. Someone breathing, moving and shaking. With a story to tell, lots of them about where they grew up. What it is like here, how things roll. What is important, where values and work ethic come into play.
That family is everything in Maine.
In the twists and turns in life.
Serving for the greater good of your small local Maine community with the talents that we all have. Has to happen.
To bring something to the table.
What we are good at and with practice and lots of passion become great at.
To contribute to the local community flavor.
I love where I live in Maine.
