How To Run A Local Soap Box Derby Race, What Does It Require.

houlton maine soap box derby photo

Over the last eighteen years, my family has been fortunate to be involved in the local Maine Soap Box derby program.

All the kids raced in the kit car, down hill sport.

Complete with a trailer to haul behind the jeep with berths for all the kid's cars.

To travel to soap box derby rallies in other parts of Maine, into New Hampshire.

Learn more about how to run, what it takes for a local soap box derby race.

Like NASCAR, each car built from scratch, the individual drivers all have color, a spark, personality.

That one by one adds to the gravity  racing downhill sporting event.

Were you involved in soap box derby racing, where the winner heads to the World Series of Derby racing in Akron Ohio?

Chances are you or someone you know from the past was part of the derby racing program.

Have heard stories. This year's Ohio derby race is the 76th running and held July 27th on the historic derby downs course with three lanes. And racers from around the world competing in the family fun, competitive car racing sporting event.

Local communities in Maine show up to support racers, to sponsor and underwrite the event. Our Maine race is this Saturday and it is andrew mooers soap box derby racing photothe 18th in a long, proud series of annual events.

The Houlton Maine race the largest race city of them all five years in a row.

Held on a specially engineered hill to save time in the set up.

To avoid inconvenience for the locals in a neighborhood that happen to live on a hill that could be ideal for the derby racing course.

A lot goes into starting up, to keep a derby car racing program running.

Any one thinking of starting a derby racing program, I would love to field questions and help guide.

In the process of getting other local soap box derby car racing programs started, growing, running.

At one time, there were five race cities in all of Maine.

Now the Houlton Maine Derby Hill Program is the one and only venue for the down hill kit car soap box racing event.

Maine, big state, more community involved down to Earth people, plenty of wildlife live here.

Like any program, to keep it safe, fair, fun, the volunteers behind the scenes make it or break it. The need for your own hill is the greatest. Without one, the set up and tear down will burn out the crew to the point you don't have one for the rest of the race. Too much ROI on the course and neglect of the rest of the components happens. And there is always weather...that can rain on the parade but we train the drivers to expect blistering heat, blazing sunshine, dark clouds and thunderstorms, heck even snow...come prepared for it all. Hydration on hot days is key for all the kids. The larger races with 200 racers are fun to see go together like a broadway stage production...neat program, experience for driver and family, community.

L Times 2 ... Car racing, without the motor, fumes, noise of NASCAR. But the personality, creative spirit is different on each one.
