Kayaking In The Sea...Don't The Waves Get Kinda Big Off Maine Coast? (Gulp)

kayak shadow paddling             Kayaks everywhere on the roofs of cars heading into Maine on the turnpike with a sea of colors of license plates on the cars carrying them.  Where do you look for info on safe sea kayaking and what is this phenomenon all about anyway? Ocean kayaking not where you want to hone your skills to start out with?  Head inland in Maine here for more waterways around  Vacationland. Paddle around the Pine Tree State and see loons up close and personal without disturbing them with motor boats and alot of commotion.

Andrew, I started Sea Kayaking clear back in 1981 when boats were few and information fewer.  There is a lot of information out there about kayaking safely, tidal currents, boat rating, cooking and many places to go.  There is a good magazine aptly named Sea Kayaker.  Some of the best books are The Coastal Kayaker by Randel Washburne, Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation by David Burch and Sea Kayaking by John Dowd.  It is a wonderful outdoor pastime and, if one gets ample training/experience can be done relatively safely.  I say relatively because any time you are in nature/ocean there is an element of risk.
