Ever picked potatoes? My personal best high was 88 barrels in one day but that was hustling, having lots of potatoes in clean picking without grass. And lots of empty barrels, never running out was key. The tractor digger did not break down and kept uncovering more and more golden spuds to toss in the basket, dump in the barrel. If you picked potatoes as a kid for 30 cents for each barrel which weighs 165 pounds, you know your back can suddenly act up, let you know hey, all these baskets you are lugging here and there was starting to annoy that back. Watch this potato picking video and see how it teaches kids work ethic, and becomes a fall tradition used to buy their clothes. Plenty of fresh early fall air, a break from school and some spending money, a portion you get to keep, to enjoy.
Maine kids learn long before they are 18 what a dollar is worth, how to hang onto it.Whether what is being contemplated for purchase is worth the effort for the money needed to take it off the shelf, to take it home as a purchase is the pause needed to ponder as you wander thru a store, thumb thru a catalog or go online shopping. Picking potatoes..sometimes bending over while standing up to collect those spuds. Other times as the sun heat beats down and the day rolls on, filling the basket on the ground while dragging it, leaning on it and droning out. Here's the video.
