Dateline Houlton Maine...what is the current news, what is happening in Southern Aroostook County this morning?Well in local Maine sport news, the town of Houlton ME is celebrating the state class C high school golf championship. For the second time in four years, Coach Bruce Nason's squad has brought home the gold and put Houlton Maine on the map. Golfer's Nick Chase, Ian Gervais and Logan Shaffer each shot a 6-over-par 78 to lead the Houlton Shiretowners to the state golf title Saturday at Natanis Golf Course. Gaige Flewelling pitched in an 84 for the final Houlton score of 318 as the best four of five individual scores making up the total according to Houlton coach Nason.
Turning to local snowsledding news, Wednesday night, October 14th at the Meduxnekeag Ramblers Snowmobile Club House in Littleton Maine on Cary Lake will be the site for a membership supper. A traditional turkey meal complete with all the extras is free to those signing up for another year of support for the local snowsled trail system. The club also invites local Aroostook land owners who allow the trail system to cross private property to make snowsledding the fun winter experience many enjoy. It has been estimated the average Maine snowsledder pumps a thousand dollars a week into the local economy during a slower time of the year for most Maine businesses.
And this just in, the Elm Tree Diner, a local restaurant institution in Houlton Maine for many years that suffered a fire recently is planning on rebuilding.And in the interim, Owners Gary and Hope Dwyer plan to open a temporary operation at the former Governor's Restaurant location on the North Road, behind the Shiretown Motel. Roughly 30 people were put out of work from that fire that did extensive damage but caused no personal injury. The cause of that fire tied to an electrical problem. And before we break for a commercial announcement and turn to local weather, news in Houlton Maine that the 28 unit housing project under contruction in the Market Square parking lot just west of the Temple Theatre and Zippy's Take Out Restaurant continues. Crews are working hard to complete ground work, the intrastructure hook ups for water, sewer and to get framing of the three story structure overlooking the Meduxnekeag River weather tight for further winter construction and completion.
Speaking of weather, local Northern Maine potato farmers could use a little more sunshine, dryer digging conditions and temperatures above freezing each night for the days ahead. Area growers are grateful for a quality crop and larger yields during the harvest this season. Wet colder days have plagued area farmers anxious to get the crop out of the ground and into storage. Rain is in weekly forecast for the yearly traditional harvest now underway that Aroostook County youth are involved in to help area spud growers get the crop safely stored for the winter.
