A cat is always glad to see you, especially when they hear the can opener going or wonder what you are snacking on. You will find yourself talking to the cats, reaching down no matter how busy to pat them on the head or stratch behind an ear.  And they are always near by...when you watch tv, my cat Allie, a spayed female  is always a few feet away.  When I decorate the christmas tree, the cat is watching the bright lights and considering scaling the tree.  Her counterpart Hero, a neutered male has a whole different temperament..friendly but a little more distant and more anxious to go outside to climb a tree.  They care for each other, preening, wrestling, taking turns eating. 

My son Elliot is more the magnet for Hero..Allie seeks me out when I come in for lunch or call it a day.  Hero came from a home I was selling in Amity and he was in the video I shot of the home..very friendly.  The owners could not take him to Florida and wondered where he would end up...he came home after the listing to be a companion to the cat we adopted as a kitten from the shelter.  This Christmas, consider adopting a kitten or cat.  It is the gift that gives back 365 days of the year.  The Houlton Human Society also has an anonymous doner who will pay the adoption fee so it has never been easier to give something warm, soft, purring this holiday season and help out the shelter's population at the same time. Had a friend pick up Maine lobsters for $2.50 a pound off the boat on the coast of Maine. Whoaaaa. 

Maybe having a little lobster for the holidays, say a stew Christmas Eve would make the season brighter.  Or a fresh made Maine blueberry pie with some vanilla ice cream on it could finish the perfect meal this holiday season. Learn about the 60,000 acres of blueberries grown in Maine. This year's crop was big..90 million pounds compared to the 75 million average. Roughly a 40% drop in price this year due to the large yield in Maine and Canada. Wild Maine blueberries usually sell fro around $1.16 a pound to cooperatives but this year some growers are letting them go for 64 cents a pound. Hard work in the sun to rake them too! But nothing like being out on the cold, windy, big wave Maine coast dropping and hoisting lobby tracks on the open sea. The guy is always joyful and laughing.  A little overweight and overwhelmed as Christmas approaches, but Santa gets the job done.

  Driving the same old paid for sleigh and he's kind to his reindeer.  He needs them. They like him and will head out in the worse weather year after year. Everyone knows their job, their place on the team. All work for other's joy. No self gain. No new corporate jet to head to congressional hearings..just the same old ride.  No new clothes or need to remake his image, to package him for the media to make him a darling.  He's who he is, simple, good, hardworking.  He feels personally responsible if workshop production of the newest toy is behind schedule and has the support of a super woman that understands him, loves him, listens to him. And can she cook...even though Santa's blood sugar level is a tad on the high side with all those holiday sweets folks leave him and the reindeer.  The country could learn from Santa...he is not a militant kinda guy.  I bet he does not even own a gun. He is so busy making Christmas bright for hundreds of millions around the globe and knows the reason for the season.  No one ever asks what do you think Santa wants for Christmas.  No news of elves work stoppage or strikes for better working conditions.  Everyone knows their job, does their part, pulls together in the traces.  He's probably pretty civic minded at the North Pole, chairman of the planning board, goes to church regulary and contributes more than 10% of his income each year.  Has he ever been audited? Is he misunderstood? Has he ever been on Time magazine or been given a Noble prize? Santa avoids the limelight...a quick skilled roof landing, without GPS, care not to remove any shingles with a sled runner, a touch of the nose..and suddenly he is in your living room. Munch some coconut peanut balls, slurp of milk and gone. 

Santa could be a CPA too...getting materials just in time, not tying up money in inventory of parts and materials. Also carefully collecting names of good or naughty boys and girls. Keeping a careful ledger with the skill of the CIA with his watchful eyes or informants.  He reads the letters kids send...he is in the real world and understands his customer.  Politicians should read letters of folks in the real world that have needs, hopes, desires, dreams, worries.  Is he judgemental?  To keep over worked but loyal elves happy, he must be fair.  There must be your share of workshop disputes over someone not getting recognition for a job well done, or passed over for a promotion that caused hard feelings.  But Santa mediates like a secretary of state or head of a country. You could call him a world leader even though he is far too busy to be at conferences or generate sound bites on the nightly news offering his two cents on daily topics.  He has never written a book for seven figures.  He's never had time to be on a game show, take a cruise, or have his own children. He has been the subject of a slew of movies, mall marketing campaigns, print media center spreads. And like Elvis wannebees, millions dress up like him for office parties or to have pictures taken with children in whatever village, town, city they reside in.  Maybe after the holidays, the news media should try to link up for a fireside chat and like the pope, or a past president roll the tape to glean wisdom on what each of us needs to do to get thru the economic upheaval the world is experiencing. Common sense, tried and tested advice from a grandfather figure...that's Santa. Is he too square, too simple and would he be as popular if he wasn't giving you something?  This Christmas, think of being in Santa's size 12 fur lined boots and all he has to juggle to make everyone happy.  How many letters do you think Santa gets where the writer asks for nothing, indicates they have tried to be good and just writing to hope others more needy, depressed or homeless and hungry get what they so deperately need this Christmas? Santa also would make a heck of a realtor.
